Chorus trials gigabit wireless solution for fibre lead-ins
Chorus has today announced that it has successfully trialled a wireless solution that could provide gigabit speeds without the need for fibre from the street into a customer’s premise.
The company is considering Nokia’s WPON, Wireless Passive Optical Networking, solution for use where direct fibre deployment may not be feasible, for example in multiple dwelling units, rights of way, or business parks where there are consenting challenges.
WPON uses a small access point on a nearby telephone pole or lamppost that is connected to the fibre running down the street.
On the customer’s side, they simply need an outdoor antenna which links to their router inside the premise using an Ethernet cable. WPON uses unlicensed 60GHz spectrum, so it is not subject to spectrum auctions.
The technology requires line of sight between the access point and customer’s premise.
Chorus’ trials have shown speeds of around 1.6Gbps over 150m, with WPON delivering a theoretical maximum of 3Gbps.
“WPON is potentially an extremely useful tool in Chorus’ toolbox as we continue to look for innovative ways to improve the customer experience, delivering better and faster connectivity as easily as possible for consumers,” said Ed Hyde, Chief Customer Officer.
“This innovation builds on progress being made on a range of fronts, including the introduction of the first residential 10Gbps services next month and our announcement of more affordable gigabit pricing.
“We are continuing with the improvements to the overall fibre installation experience which now sees the majority of fibre installations completed in a single visit, and we will soon be introducing a new premium business fibre product with faster restore times, which is aimed at business-critical applications.
“Work is also progressing on fibre unbundling and we anticipate releasing initial pricing over the next couple of months,” he said.
Chorus will continue to test the WPON technology to ensure it is ready for wide-scale deployment, including testing its performance in a range of weather conditions and other scenarios.
