Residents in the Royal Court Apartments on Hinemoa Street will be able to make the most of the latest telecommunications technology when Chorus wires their building with dual fibre copper cabling which is being used for the first time. With some of the fastest internet connections in town, apartment residents will be able to enjoy access to online applications such as in-home entertainment, integrated services and remote access to home devices. Chorus Head of Field Services Ed Beattie says it makes sense to ensure such a large building is prepared for the rapid advances occurring in telecommunications and broadband services. "The dual fibre copper cable future proofs apartments to get the best broadband performance today and unleash the ultra fast speeds of the future." He said. Because of the proximity to the local telephone exchange, the configuration and performance of the new wiring, Royal Court residents should be able to access broadband speeds nearing 50Mbps over copper based technology and well beyond 100Mbps when fibre services become available. The new cable supports both DSL and fibre based services through copper pairs and fibres which can deliver voice, broadband and high speed data services. Royal Court's Developer Whittle Kwok says the new apartments are a first for Rotorua city living not only for its design but in the quality and standard of its construction "It's great that Chorus is future proofing the building with fibre as it's a real selling point for this development" said Mr Kwok. Most new homes and apartments continue to be wired for voice and low speed data services using the older 2-wire system. Online applications will quickly exceed the capabilities of older wiring as demand for bandwidth increases. "Wiring up right the first time releases the broadband handbrake and could save home owners thousands of dollars in re-wiring costs" said Mr Beattie. In March 2010 the Telecommunications Carriers' Forum released a voluntary code of practice for premises wiring detailing how to wire up buildings or premises for telecommunications services. This includes wiring specification and configuration requirements (www.tcf.org.nz/premwiring). In all, Chorus will connect 75 apartments and 35 retail outlets with 7km of the new cable by the end of April next year.
